South Shore Hospice is now fully operational and was celebrated with a special event on Thursday. The event was held at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital. All five hospice beds are now open, allowing for enhanced access to compassionate, specialized end-of-life support close to home for patients and families. Hospice Medical Director Dr. Patricia Caldeira said the day was about celebrating all five beds being open, "But more importantly, it was about reaching a level where people can spend their time at end-of-life surrounded by comfort, dignity and compassionate care." Beds began opening in January in a phased approach over several months. The hospice has received generous support from the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society, the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore and the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
