Pair charged after newborn’s remains found remanded into custody

Two people charged after the remains of a newborn were found near Halifax have been remanded into custody and may face more “very serious” charges in the case. 23-year-old Sukhpreet Singh and his wife, 26-year-old Ramandeep Kaur, appeared in court via video on Monday. The pair face charges of concealing the body of a child, indignity to a dead body and obstruction. The Crown attorney asked for an adjournment in the case to review electronic devices seized during the investigation. He noted that the content on the devices is in a foreign language, and more time is needed. He also opposed the pair's release. The 23-year-old mother of the newborn remains in the hospital in critical condition and at this time is unresponsive. The body of the child is with the medical examiner, and preliminary autopsy reports should be released soon. The accused will be back in court on Thursday.
