A deceased person has been located at the scene of Wednesday’s devastating fire in downtown Bridgewater.
In a media release issued Wednesday night, Bridgewater Police Service says investigators with police and fire services discovered the body within the fire scene on King Street. Based on current evidence and circumstances, investigators believe the deceased is the resident who had previously been reported missing following the blaze.
Police say the victim has not yet been positively identified, and no further details will be released until family notification has been completed.
The massive fire broke out earlier in the day in the 300 block of King Street, drawing response from more than a dozen fire departments from across Lunenburg County and beyond. At one point, fire crews from Kings County were also dispatched to assist.
Officials say the fire scene remains dangerous, with hotspots and smoke still present. Severe structural damage continues to pose risks to emergency crews and investigators working in the area.
Once the site is deemed safe, Bridgewater Police will continue the investigation alongside the Office of the Fire Marshal and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office.
Road closures in the area remain in effect and are expected to continue until police determine it is safe to reopen the streets.
In their statement, police offered condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and the broader community, while also urging the public to avoid speculation as the investigation continues.
